About Pilates and What to Look for in a Pilates Class

Modern Pilates is a contemporary and updated approach to Pilates exercise. The programme has been designed by Cherry Baker and physiotherapist Chris Norris & associates Nikki Hambling trained with Modern Pilates and Cherry Baker. Modern Pilates is a method of exercise that will condition and tone the body. Its methods are very different from many traditional types of exercise. The aim is to work muscles from the inside out, creating a stronger flatter midsection, improved posture, muscle balance, realigning the spine and improving both the function and appearance of the body. Modern Pilates is a relaxing and individual programme which works both the body & mind. Modern Pilates is also aimed at relieving stress and can help improve sleep patterns and tension, specifically in the neck and shoulders. It works as a stand-alone exercise regime for rehabilitation or in conjunction with other exercise programmes allowing for a balanced approach for the body. It is popular among all age groups and physical ability.

Background to Pilates. Pilates is not new. It is an exercise discipline that gained popularity with dancers in New York during the 1920s. Joseph Hubertus Pilates was born in Germany during the 1880s originally developed some of his methods with prisoners of war who had lost limbs or suffered injury. A lot of his methods were drawn from swimming gymnastics, Tai Chi Yoga and other sports. Modern Pilates combines the best of Pilates’ principles with sports science and research from the 21st Century. As a new client you are asked to complete a questionnaire regarding health, well-being and injury. If needed a referral from your doctor or practitioner may be required.

Pilates Courses Classes run on a course basis to allow me to get to know you individually, develop specific exercises or adaptations and change exercises each term. The classes use a variety of teaching aids, full-length mats, blocks, bands, knobbly balls and various support methods for individual use. Equipment such as blocks and supports enable me to offer adaptations where appropriate.

About Our Other Classes

Hitt and Circuit Class

Hitt section works on raising your heart rate to its upper level, for short bursts and then resting but not fully recovering. A typical example would be 30 seconds work 30 seconds rest. The exercises can vary from squats, running or marching on the spot and sideways lunges, for example. The idea is to work the whole body.

The circuit section will include two or three exercises, performed using a pyramid of reps. For example, 10 pinpoint, 8 squats, 6 bridges, 4 side bridges and 2 side lunges, in a set time, for example 5 mins, to complete as many of the circuit exercises as possible. It will be hot and sweaty and can be adapted if you are unable to do a certain type of exercise. I will need to know of any injuries and medical conditions in advance of the class, as it will not be suitable for some clients. The session will finish with some stretching.
